Alexander Hamilton
My daughter and I were obsessed with Hamilton: An American Musical when it debuted, and we even drove to Chicago to see it on stage for her 10th birthday. I bought the novel by Ron Chernow and the thing is, it’s interesting — the pages are just incredibly dense and it fell by the wayside.
Twice.
This time around I’ve got a reading plan that begins January 1, and if all goes as planned I’ll conquer this sucker by the end of July.

The Book of Longings
I’m a big fan of every book I’ve read by Sue Monk Kidd: The Dance of the Dissident Daughter, The Secret Life of Bees, and The Mermaid Chair are just a few.
So when I listened to her on Brené Brown’s podcast Unlocking Us, I knew I had to get The Book of Longings. The many reviews I’ve read and social media posts I’ve seen over the past few months have only increased my excitement.

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood
Confession: I started Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood over a year ago, and got distracted for an extended period of time and didn’t go back. Which is crazy, because one of the first chapters has what may be the funniest stories I’ve ever heard. It’s incredible, but you have to hear Trevor Noah tell it.
How? About 10 years ago, I discovered the joy of listening to memoirs read by the authors themselves. It’s like listening to someone tell their own story, and it’s incredible. Now I exclusively listen to memoirs, and who knows: maybe I’ll make another post soon about my top favorites.

The Curse of the Good Girl
I read about The Curse of the Good Girl many years ago, and as a “good girl” myself growing up, I knew I needed this for raising my own daughters. I’m a little late to the game — my teenager already checks her courage in favor of being polite, modest, and selfless — but it’s never too late to learn and pass along to my girls.
